INSTALLATION METHODS

There are several ways to install Joomla on your web host, ranging from the very easy to the somewhat more complicated.

Asking Your Host

You can ask your host to install Joomla for you. Some of the Joomla hosting companies in the Joomla Resources Directory (http://resources.joomla.org/directory/support-services/hosting.html) will do this for you — some for an additional charge, some free.

Fantastico

Fantastico is a utility included with your control panel that offers quick and easy installation of many popular software packages, including Joomla. Fantastico downloads the software, creates the database, and gets Joomla running in just a few clicks.

Sounds great! What could possibly go wrong?

Unfortunately, there are a few downsides. Fantastico is frequently out of date. It's not uncommon for Fantastico to be one or even several versions behind Joomla. Occasionally, even if Fantastico is offering the most current version, it may cause issues in permissions on the web server, meaning Joomla may not work correctly.

If you've followed my advice, and you've chosen one of the web hosts listed in the Joomla Resources Directory, you shouldn't encounter problems installing Joomla (other than the issue with an old Joomla version offered through Fantastico). I cover installing Joomla with Fantastico later in this lesson.

Rochen's Joomla! Utilities

If you are working with Rochen, you can find a host-specific utility available in the control panel called Joomla Utilities. ...
