The Joomla forums, at http://forum.joomla.org are a great place to start contributing to the Joomla project.
The forums are where Joomla users go to ask questions concerning Joomla installation, configuration, and customization. Although many of the users are new to Joomla, plenty of experienced people visit there as well, providing valuable advice and assistance.
My friend Ken Crowder, known as ChiefGoFor on the forums, told me that he learned Joomla by making himself answer two questions for every one question he asked. It's a great philosophy, and one you can certainly adopt as your own to further your Joomla learning while giving back to the project at the same time.
I recommend you start in the Newbie forums for asking and answering questions. There are questions there that you can answer!
