SHOULD YOU UPGRADE TO JOOMLA! 1.6?

If you are reading this book, you probably have no reason to upgrade to Joomla 1.6. The only compelling reason to move to Joomla 1.6 at this time is if you need the features and functionality it contains. For sites you are likely to build initially, including small nonprofit sites, churches and synagogues, sports teams, service clubs, and other small websites, it's unlikely you'll need any of the new features in Joomla 1.6. I would recommend you wait until January 2012 to start thinking about upgrading your website to a new version of Joomla.

Finally, you will need to be careful as you look for resources for Joomla 1.6. Because Joomla 1.5 has been the major Joomla version in use for three years, thousands of extensions and templates are available for it. Template and extension developers are actively reworking their products for Joomla 1.6, but this does take some time. Be aware that Joomla 1.5 templates and extensions are generally not compatible with Joomla 1.6. Read all documentation carefully to ensure that you are downloading templates and extensions compatible with your version of Joomla.
