JOOMLA!'S DEVELOPMENT PATH

In a recent blog post (http://community.joomla.org/blogs/leadership/1395-the-path-forward-migration-and-the-future.html), Joomla's leadership outlined their development plans for Joomla in the coming years.

As of January 2011, two supported versions of Joomla are available, Joomla 1.5 and Joomla 1.6. (You may occasionally hear about Joomla 1.0, but that version of Joomla is no longer supported as of July 2009.)

Joomla 1.5 will continue to be supported and have regular updates through April 2012. At that point, it will reach the end of its life, and it will no longer be supported.

Joomla 1.6 will be in active development through July 2011, when the next version of Joomla, believed to be called Joomla 1.7, will be released.

Another new release of Joomla (currently called Joomla 1.8, but the name could change) is slated for January 2012. This release will be supported long-term, not for only 6–12 months, as Joomla 1.6 and 1.7 will be.

A third-party extension will be available for developers who wish to move their site from Joomla 1.5 to 1.6. This move is not necessarily simple to do, so you may want to hire a web developer to help you if this move is required. Another tool is in active development for moving sites from Joomla 1.5 or Joomla 1.6 to Joomla 1.7.
