Installing and Configuring JEvents

Calendars are very popular additions to websites. It's a great way to list upcoming events for an organization. At Fictitious Elementary, several events are always happening each month, as well as events within the school district. A calendar is a great addition for a school like this.

However, a calendar isn't necessarily justified based on a handful of yearly events. For best results with a calendar, the organization should have several events each month. Otherwise, the calendar looks empty, as if the organization isn't doing anything.

If your organization has only a few events per year, you might consider listing those events in a standard article and linking that to the website. If you wanted the events to appear in a sidebar, you could list them in a custom HTML module.

In other words, a calendar is not required to display events on your website! A calendar simply helps organize a bunch of events into a more accessible format. If you don't have a large number of events, you don't need a calendar.

This lesson covers the JEvents calendar, a popular free calendar that integrates nicely with Joomla. However, you can find other terrific calendars out there for Joomla, such as JCal Pro (http://dev.anything-digital.com), which requires a low-cost subscription. If you prefer to work with Google Calendar, the GCalendar extension will integrate a Google Calendar into your website (http://g4j.laoneo.net).
