Changing the Editor in Joomla! to JCE

An editor is the tool used for editing articles, custom HTML modules, category and section descriptions, and other editing screens within Joomla. Until this point, we have been working with the TinyMCE editor, which is included with Joomla.

TinyMCE has some significant drawbacks in its editing functions, unfortunately:

  • There is no easy way to link to another article on the website. You must know the URL of the page to which you need to link, rather than browse for it.
  • There is no easy way to link to a PDF document (or any other kind of document). You need to upload the PDF in the Media Manager, then remember the path to the PDF to link to it within TinyMCE.
  • Pasting from Word requires an extra step and remembering to click the Paste from Word button.

In general, most developers prefer to get rid of TinyMCE shortly after installing Joomla. Many editors are available to use as substitutes for TinyMCE, but one of the consistent favorites, which is generally viewed as one of the best Joomla editors available, is JCE, the Joomla Content Editor.
