Idea 68: Six tips to build your confidence

1. Breathe deeply.

Breathe well down into your lungs. This enables your diaphragm to control the release of breath from your lungs as you utter each word.

2. Manage your hands.

If your hands seem to ‘get in your way’, clasp them loosely in front of you or place them behind your back. Train yourself to forget them.

3. Look at your audience.

Look at your audience all the time you are speaking and embrace them all in your glance. Try to forget yourself in the urge to communicate.

4. Move well.

Let your movements be deliberate and unhurried. In a big hall, make your gestures a little larger than life. Gestures spring spontaneously from the words that are on your lips, so don’t try to rehearse them – ...
