Idea 48: Banish the fear of mistakes

The fear of getting it wrong creates a climate in which anxiety, delay and indecision take root. Paradoxically, many books and courses on rational decision making, often replete with algebraic equations, can feed that fear of getting it wrong. You need confidence to make decisions. That means ridding yourself of the fear of making mistakes. Of course you will make mistakes, but that is better than doing nothing.

No manager in their right senses actually intends to make mistakes. They need a checklist to ensure that they remain in the flight path of the effective decision. Here are some key questions for your own checklist:

  • Have I defined the objective?
  • Do I have sufficient information?
