If people thank you for what you have done it seems natural; if they don't something is missing.

The reason we feel this way is because our common human nature is deeply reciprocal. Reciprocity is an equal return or counteraction by each of two sides. If you respect people, they will tend to respect you. It is about equivalence in value, but not necessarily in kind.

Unspoken gratitude is useless.

The return you make in words should reflect the nature of what has been given or shared with you.
