Chapter 24. Freight Containers
In the old days, freight was shipped in whatever packaging the suppliers wished to use. This meant an incredible amount of manual labor was needed to handle cargo. Freight containers reduced the labor required, but without standardization, automating cargo handling was not possible.
There are a lot of ISO codes for freight containers, but the most important one is ISO 6346. This is the international standard for identifying freight containers.

The code starts with a three-letter owner code assigned by Bureau International des Containers (BIC). This is a 1,700 member nongovernmental coordinating organization for the containerization and intermodal transport industries.
