Chapter 11. Language Codes
The ISO-639 has a two-letter (639-1) and a three-letter (639-2) code for languages. The two-letter codes are favored by computer people because they encode current languages and are embedded in other standards. The three-letter codes are favored by librarians because they cover a wide range of existing, dead, and ancient languages.
The three-letter codes include “mis” for uncoded languages and “zbl” for Blissymbolics. The later is a pictographic system used mostly for the handicapped. The Library of Congress registers the three-letter codes and Infoterm is the agency for the two-letter codes. You can find a current list on the Library of Congress Web site.
