Acknowledgments

It's been predicted that self-employment in the United States will rise by 11%, or 1.15 million people, in 2014, and that number could grow even more in coming years. Some are saying that as many as 40% of all workers will soon be free-lancers. I believe that self-employed people as a group are very important to the U.S. economy. To help the group succeed, I wanted provide easy-to-understand explanations of serious, complex, back-office issues for self-employed individuals: keeping records, paying taxes, collecting fees, and making smart financial-related business decisions. This book is aimed at the self-employed service provider who bills for his or her time, works alone, and has responsibility for all aspects of the business. I salute you.

I want to thank Tim Burgard and David Pugh of Wiley for agreeing with my vision and supporting this project. And I invite readers to share their thoughts, successes, challenges, and concerns with me at Barbara@barbaraweltman.com.
