A New Old Thing

The basic idea behind Web services is not particularly new. In fact, it's old. One of the important aspects of Web services is its ability to act as a common language and messaging platform across disparate systems. However, this vision was quite like that of days prior.

The OMG's IIOP (Internet Inter-Orb Protocol) was supposed to be the Internet standard for system-to-system interchange—much as CORBA was to be the broker for large-scale applications. These specifications had the backing of many companies and grew to be quite large and complex. As it turned out, CORBA did not quite become the ubiquitous platform OMG had hoped.
