Summary

In this chapter, you were introduced to Web services. With a birds-eye view of what Web services are and how they're useful, you should have a good understanding of the intent behind them. Foremost is the capability to glue systems together in ad hoc ways using a single, common, and neutral discovery and invocation stack, which is the Web services platform. As you learned earlier, this platform comprises primarily components (SOAP, XML, UDDI, WSDL) that come together to provide a business service as what has been called a Web service. The key differentiator is the platform neutrality provided as these technologies work together.
