Chapter 2. Java Overview

This chapter provides an introduction to the Java programming language and the Java platform. The information presented here is expected to benefit both novice and experienced Java practitioners; Java programmers with experience writing applets may be unaware of the range of Java programming environments available, including stand-alone applications, JavaBean software components, and Java servlets. Readers will also learn some of the finer points of the Java language, including exception handling, and be given an overview of the various networking Application Program Interfaces (APIs) of Java.
