Chapter 1. Introduction

SQLJ is a technology that enables Java programs to access a database using embedded Structured Query Language (SQL) statements. This chapter introduces SQLJ, describes the software requirements for using SQLJ, and shows you how to configure your computer to develop SQLJ programs. You will see how to use SQLJ to develop a version of the classic "Hello World" program that can access a database. You will also be introduced to the Oracle JDeveloper tool for developing Java programs, and you will see how to use JDeveloper to compile, run, and debug SQLJ programs.
