1.2. Joining the Commons-User Mailing List

You want to ask a question about a component in Jakarta Commons.

Solution

Join the [e-mail] mailing list, and ask your question. This mailing list is full of Commons users, and it is a good place to discuss any problems you’ve had with a particular utility in the Jakarta Commons.

The Jakarta Commons-user mailing list is a place for users of all Commons components to ask questions of other users and Commons developers. This mailing list has a high volume of messages, and subscribers should prefix all subjects with the component you are discussing. In the case of Commons Lang, make sure your email subject starts with [lang] before sending a message to the Commons-user mailing list; otherwise, your email may be ignored.

If you have a question or a comment, you will save yourself time and trouble if you search the archives of the Commons-user mailing list (http://www.mail-archive.com/[e-mail]/) for related discussions. The archives of this mailing list are a great place to look if you are having problems with a particular Commons component. Try not to ask a question that has already been asked and answered in a previous discussion, and remember that the Apache Software Foundation (ASF) is a volunteer organization—members of the community will gladly assist you if you provide enough information. And, don’t be shy. If you know the answer to someone’s question, you don’t have to ask for anyone’s permission to actively participate.
