Apache Axis is a SOAP engine implementation. Its primary function is to accept SOAP messages, perform processing and dispatch the request, after appropriate conversions, to the target program. It is compliant to Java specifications JAX-RPC 1.0 and SAAJ. Though it can run as a standalone server, it is designed to leverage capabilities of a Web container like Apache Tomcat.
Very much like Apache Tomcat, it has been developed in an open and participatory environment hosted by Apache Software Foundation and released under Apache Software License.
