4.4. What Is a Reference Architecture?

In this book, a reference architecture has the following characteristics:

  • Underlying Architecture Framework— This provides a structure (meta-architecture) that defines the logical and physical components that constitute the business services, and the processes used to develop it.

  • Architectural Principles— These are rules and guidelines that help design and govern scalable, reliable architecture.

  • Design Patterns— These are models that tell when and what technology to use.

  • Supporting Software Tools— A reference architecture is not a laboratory product. It should have supporting commercial implementations and off-the-shelf vendor products. An overview of what product solution options are available.
