4.4. What Is a Reference Architecture?
In this book, a reference architecture has the following characteristics:
Underlying Architecture Framework— This provides a structure (meta-architecture) that defines the logical and physical components that constitute the business services, and the processes used to develop it.
Architectural Principles— These are rules and guidelines that help design and govern scalable, reliable architecture.
Design Patterns— These are models that tell when and what technology to use.
Supporting Software Tools— A reference architecture is not a laboratory product. It should have supporting commercial implementations and off-the-shelf vendor products. An overview of what product solution options are available.
