XML Standards

The XML standard was created by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) which created the specification based on input from a number of individuals and organizations. Additional standards have been developed which complement the XML standard and loom large in any discussion of using the technology. These standards are listed in Table 14-1.

The complete description of XML and the tools used for XML processing are beyond the scope of this text. We will focus on the more common usage of XML in a J2EE application: data description and formatting. This entails coverage of the XML parsing and transformation APIs: XML, XSL, and XPATH. These APIs and standards are described and demonstrated in this chapter.
