The Female Opportunity

Hixonia Nyasulu is a black woman who grew up in Johannesburg, South Africa, under apartheid. The daughter of a deep gold-mining operator, she attended a Durban boarding school on scholarship, then progressed to the University of Zululand, graduating with degrees in social work and psychology. Venturing to the United States, she studied at the Arthur D. Little School of Management (now the Hult International Business School), then scored a graduate trainee spot at consumer goods giant Unilever in 1978. Six years later, at age twenty-eight, she founded her own marketing and research company, propelling herself into the growing ranks of standout African business leaders.
