Make Sure of Your Contract

When I started on this series of ads, I was told I had five days to shoot and I was supposed to come back with three ads. When I did commercial shoots, I always overshot, did many variations, tried many different approaches. I stipulated to the client that if I came up with more than three shots, I would be paid separately for each additional shot.

My instructions were to take photographs of the ships that would make them look streamlined and gorgeous. I did those, but I also did pictures that made the boat look absolutely enormous, some of the ship very small, also some other variations. I shot a lot of film.

We encountered problems as we always did. The ships weren’t there. They were there, but wouldn’t move for me. ...
