Finally, People

I did a book on Baja, California. It’s about 600 miles long, very narrow, and at the time had no paved roads down its spine.

I was given one particular brief about shooting this book: no matter what I shot, whether it was from the air or on the ground, there must be no people or buildings. After all, this was for “The American Wilderness” series for Time-Life Books.

Like a method actor preparing for the part, I stopped shooting anything on people. No picture of my guide, no pictures of my assistant, no buildings, nothing.

This went on for three weeks: sea, desert, skies, cactus, trees, canyons, mountains I could shoot, but not people, no sign of anything called civilization.
