Try to Be Open

I was supposed to go to Mostek, a part of United Technologies, to shoot an ad about microprocessors. The company had sent some scouting photos to me. They had a yellow light everywhere, and I wondered why the photographer had not corrected them for the obvious color defect.

When I got there, I found out the entire atmosphere was yellow and it was done to protect the chips from white light.

I did the shot and was quite pleased with it.

When I turned it in, the response I got was, “We don’t like it. We want it more symbolic, more abstract, without people.”

“Go back and, instead of trying to shoot the plant, this time we want you to shoot the chip as it appears on their very big, beautiful CAD/CAM computer.”
