I’d been working for McCann Erickson for a long time. Al Scully was one of my favorite art directors. Al was a red-faced, white-haired Irishman with the twinkly blue eyes that pronounced, “This guy is going to have a good time, no matter what.”

He said to me one day, “Hey Jay, I’ve got to do a campaign for Coke on TV. Why don’t we just go cross-country, you and I and your assistant, and we’ll do a campaign of shots of people all over the country drinking Coke.”

I said, “Look, Al, with all due respect, that’s dumb. We have to have models.”

Al said, “Jeez kid, you’re so young and thinking commercially already. Why bring models? We’ll use real people.”
