Look, Stop, and Shoot

I was on my way back home after taking my class to dinner at Buenos Aires Restaurant, a steakhouse. I had eaten too much as usual.

About 10:00 p.m., I took a cab back with one of my students. I had been going since early morning. I was tired, full, and looking forward to sleep. Then we passed this scene.

I yelled, “Stop!” to the cabbie and said to my student, “Do you want to shoot this?” The answer was, “I’m going to sleep, man.” I stayed and photographed it for about a half-hour.

An important thing I’ve learned through bitter experience is, whether you’re in a cab or driving, stop immediately. If you go on for a few feet, you may not turn back, and the further on you go, the less likely you are to stop. If you go on for ...
