The Trigger

I was photographing in what was then Yugoslavia, running around shooting all the exotic locations in Dubrovnik. It’s a walled city and the major street is not open to traffic during the day.

On this day, it was overcast, raining. It’s the kind of day most photographers don’t like to shoot. I had come back to my hotel to pick up more film and take a break. At that point in my life, I really loved shooting with long lenses and, crazy bastard that I was, I carried a lot of crap around with me.

Part of the crap that I carried included a 1000mm mirror lens. I set up the 1000mm and looked out of my hotel window. I started plucking things out of the visual tapestry in front of me. Finally, I settled on the shot you see here. There was a ...
