Sometimes You Must Improvise

This commercial assignment was for a cream to remove wrinkles. The idea was to take a beautiful picture of the light coming through the trees in the early morning, sort of like God rays. Something that said light and warmth.

We shot in Quinault, Washington. We got up before dawn three days in a row, schlepped all our equipment to the site, and the light never happened.

Someone described advertising photographers as incredibly spoiled prima donnas who want snow in August and fall leaves in May. Whatever it is they want, they want presented to them immediately. There is a lot of truth in that (it’s one of the many reasons I left that world).

We did not have time to wait around a week or so for this phenomenon to happen. ...
