You Get Two Chances

When students in my class ask me where they should go to shoot, I always stonewall them.

I try to explain that the choice of a destination or venue is their responsibility, not mine. I am not being evasive out of meanness or lack of empathy. I truly think photographs are everywhere.

If pressed further, I usually say that, if it were me, I would go to a place that if I f*¢%ed up a shot, plenty more would still come along. In other words, go where a density of things are happening.

In the case of this photo, I had run an errand right near Times Square and, when I finished and left, I was right smack in the middle of the hoopla that is Times Square. There is a feeling of festivity, a circus, of exhibitionism, of fun in general. ...
