It’s About What You Bring to the Party

I was working on a calendar for Banca di Vicenza, a bank in Vicenza, Italy.

Europeans generally give the photographer more freedom in the work than Americans do. There is, in Italy specifically, more respect for the “artist.”

When I arrived for our first meeting, I was impressed and warmed by this attitude.

“This is a calendar we do each year and each year we pick a photographer we love and let him do his thing.”

“Cool.”

I set about happily working in the town. When my time was up, I flew back to New York to do the editing. The plan was to come back later in a different season and resume the work.

I edited the job (it was film at that time) and returned to Vicenza four months later. They were horrified. ...
