“Where?”

These are very old images shot in the ‘50s or ‘60s. I put them together here to make a point.

The journalistic questions are: who, what, when, where, why, and how. When applied to photography, the two that are most important to the actual immediate execution of the image are: “Where?” and “When?”

The others are, of course, critical (we’ll discuss them in another book). Where and when are the most immediate precursors of your image. In this case, we’ll just talk about “where” because “when” is dictated by the crowds on the beach.

Within “Where?” are innumerable choices. I thought I would try an aerial to show the vast amount of people as they spread out over the beach and into the water. At this point, I wasn’t so concerned with detail ...
