Bad Light

“I only shoot at the golden time.”

“I go out very early for the morning light.”

“I love the raking light at sunset.”

“I won’t shoot in the middle of the day.”

This last remark, and other similar ones rattled off by some photographers, astonishes me.

Of course we’re attracted by sunrise and sunset. The color of the light is different and its rarity makes it even more attractive. However, when all is said and done, that leaves you about 8 hours a day in the winter and 14 to 15 hours a day in the summer where you think nothing is worth shooting.

After all, life goes on during those hours and it seems shortsighted to think that light, no matter how wonderful it is, constitutes the only factor to consider in figuring out what makes a photograph. ...
