The authors have known each other since 1988 and have worked closely together on numerous projects reflecting shared personal and professional interests.

James S. Evans is a professor at Lawrence University (Appleton, Wisconsin), where he also serves as Director of Information Technology Planning. He has taught laboratory computing, assembly language, computer architecture, computer hardware organization, and operating systems. He and technology leaders from other private and public universities in Wisconsin co-founded the WiscNet association, which subsequently grew to provide Internet connectivity and services to more than 500 educational and governmental units in the state.
