Chapter 3. The Flaws of the Traditional Model

The truth will set you free – but before it does, it will make you miserable.

—(De Marco's dictum)

In this chapter we will show why the traditional IT business model, based on the construction industry's client-vendor relationship, and a poor to non-existent pricing mechanism, is at best problematic, and at worst unworkable. This will lay the groundwork for proposing a new model from Chapter 4 onwards.

The pre-requisite for this chapter is a firm understanding of the basics of how an IT department operates (covered in the previous chapter, 'IT 101 – The Basics for Non-Specialists').
