Once an organization has made a decision to operate under a particular business model, this becomes only the first step of a long journey. All a business model attempts to do is to lay the ground rules for how an IT department markets, builds and sells its products, at what costs and margins, and how it interacts with its customers. After that, the devil is in the details, spanning a myriad of subjects like budgeting and cost management, programme and project management, infrastructure and architecture, leadership, risk management... and much, much more.

The recommended reading here is not about the devil in the details – there are dozens of books on each of those subjects. Rather, it is designed to tie into the general theme of this book, which on the one hand is to get you thinking out-of-the-box and able to challenge conventional wisdom where appropriate, and on the other hand to show how some of the subjects in this book can actually be applied in the real world.
