How Do You Compete?

After several days of preparation and tweaking, turning several laps, reading all the computer telemetry, and timing sessions, it is now time for the race. This is the time your adrenaline starts running, your heart starts pumping, your blood pressure goes up a little bit, and you start going over the track in your mind. Now it is time to get in the car, get strapped down, put on your Hans device, get connected to your radio, and put on your gloves and your game face. You are now ready for the parade lap and one rotation around the track scrubbing your tires in, checking your radio, tracking everything, checking your belts, making sure things are working properly, and getting ready for the start of the race. The drivers cross over and double up as we approach the turn. It is now time for us to line up and make a right-hand turn onto the straight. Your heart is pounding so hard you can feel it in your neck, and you can feel the adrenaline rushing through your body. It is time to plan where you want to go when the green flag drops. The team leader is watching the starter for the flag to drop. He has the transmission button pushed with an open microphone so he can give the command—GREEN! GREEN! GREEN!

When the flag drops, it is total chaos for a couple seconds as everyone tries to see what you are doing, to find that little hole to gain a position on everyone else. Everyone seems to head for the inside of turn one, which creates a huge traffic jam, but ...
