About the Authors

Amr El Tiby earned his BA in commerce from Cairo University in 1980, majoring in business. He earned his diploma in finance from Cairo University in 1985 and his MA in economics from the American University in Cairo in 2003. In 2009 he earned his PhD from the American University in London. Dr. El Tiby has more than 30 years of banking experience in the Middle East and the Gulf region in both conventional as well as Islamic finance. His area of research focuses on banking risk and regulations, and he is published in leading journals such as that of the Global Association of Risk Professionals (GARP). He is also the author of Islamic Banking (John Wiley & Sons, 2011).

Wafik Grais is a senior adviser on Islamic finance, finance and private equity management, SMEs, and corporate governance. He was cofounder and chairman of Viveris Mashrek, a Cairo-based financial advisory services company specializing in private equity investments in SMEs, licensed by Egypt's Financial Services Authority. He also spent 28 years in international finance, notably with the World Bank in Washington, DC, where he held several senior positions both in operations and at corporate levels.

He was a member of the Islamic Financial Services Board (IFSB) working groups on the corporate governance of Islamic financial institutions and investment funds.
