This chapter will describe the events that brought iSCSI to the storage industry. Key individuals involved in these events are acknowledged in the Credits and Disclaimer section at the beginning of this book.

The chapter will focus on the early days of iSCSI development. Included is an important set of measurements that helped IBM set its iSCSI direction with respect to NFS, Fibre Channel, and the need for a TCP/IP offload engine. Readers not interested in history should at least read the Measurements section and then pick up with the Chapter Summary.
