Find Other Mobile-Friendly Sites

If looking at regular Web pages on your iPod's browser is too much sensory overload, and RSS is a little too sparse, you have some middle ground. There are many Web sites out there that have been optimized for use on mobile devices, like cellphones, wireless PDAs, iPhones, and Touch iPods.

These sites offer large type (all the better to read on pee-wee screens) and a quick-loading graphic or two. But how do you find these little treasures?

Some big Web sites can automatically sense when you're coming in on a mobile browser and will serve you up the simplified version. Others will swap out the www part of the URL with an m (for mobile), as in m.nytimes.com.

Here are a few sites with mobile browsers in mind:

• Google (of course) has mobile versions of many of its features, like Gmail and Picasa online photo albums, at www.google.com/mobile.

• The British Broadcasting Corporation has a streamlined version of its main news site at www.bbc.co.uk/mobile.

• Yahoo has its mobile offerings, including streamlined search, sports, and stock quotes, at m.yahoo.com.

• There are also Web pages that round up links to the mobile editions of popular sites. Here are two worth bookmarking on your Touch browser:www.cantoni.mobi/. and mobile.palm.com.
