What's in the Settings Menu

The iPod Touch is a powerful little media machine, and the Settings menu is where you go to fine-tune the player's preferences to your liking. Here's what you find by tapping the Settings icon on the Home screen:

• Wi-Fi. See what network you're connected to (or not), and turn the iPod's Wi-Fi antenna on or off here.

• Fetch New Data. If you get your email, contacts, and calendar updates through a "push" service like Microsoft Exchange, Apple's MobileMe, or Yahoo, set your preferences here for how often you get those updates.

• Brightness. Sensors can automatically detect the light in the room and adjust the Touch screen brightness, but you can override that here.

• General. Here are the settings for the Touch's keyboard, sound effects, screen wallpaper, and auto-lock timer. Controls for network settings and Location Services (the Touch's GPS-like ability to plot your position on a map) are here, too. You'll also find the About screen which tells you how much stuff is on your iPod and its serial number. If you're worried about who can see your iPod's contents, you can assign a four-digit number to unlock the screen in the Passcode settings.In the International area, you can choose the iPod screen's display language or pick an onscreen keyboard designed for typing in French, German, Italian, Japanese, and several other languages. You can also reset all the settings you've been fiddling with in the General area—and even erase all the iPod's content.
