What's in the Podcasts Menu

When podcasts first appeared online several years ago, they were mostly audio files: radio-like shows to download and play on your iPod. But podcasts are not just about audio these days—there are plenty of video podcasts out there for the watching too. If you want to dive in and go get some shows right now, Chapter 7 explains how to download and subscribe to podcasts from the iTunes Store.

There are a couple of really great things about podcasts. For one, pretty much all of them are still free, so you have a wealth of fresh content available to put on your iPod every day. And another thing: They've become so popular that they rate their own menu on the latest iPod models.

Go to iPod→Podcasts to see the shows you've downloaded and synced up through iTunes. On the iPod's menu, the podcasts are sorted by the name of the show, like BBC Digital Planet or Ask a Ninja, with the total number of episodes on the iPod listed. If you haven't yet listened to an episode, a blue dot appears next to the name—which makes it easy to find the new stuff.
