For your convenience only. Adding a missing face won’t help iPhoto recognize that person’s face in the future. Put another way, iPhoto never considers a manually added face as the “seed” for further recognition. Adding a missing face is simply a way to ensure that a particular photo is included in someone’s corkboard tile.

Back-of-the-head shots. You have a romantic shot of a couple walking away from the camera on a country road. In the interest of thorough filing, you want that shot in their respective corkboard tiles—but iPhoto obviously can’t recognize the back of someone’s head. The solution: add their “faces” manually. That way, this photo will appear in their corkboard tiles.
