Filing a Flight Plan

Assume that you get on a commercial airline and buckle in. The pilot taxis to the runway, guns the engines, and the plane goes screaming into the sky at 600 miles an hour. You unbuckle, wander up to the cockpit, and ask the pilot where you are going.

The pilot turns around to you and says, “No idea. But I’ll figure it out along the way.”

That would be unsettling.

No pilot flies a plane that way. They all file detailed flight plans of where they are going and how they are going to get there. They calculate such things as fuel consumption and estimated time of arrival (ETA).
