Apple’s iPad has been the realisation of a long-held dream for many musicians, offering a portable, powerful, versatile and great-sounding electronic instrument that interfaces easily between existing home and studio recording equipment.

All this was far from being one of the iPad’s original main purposes – in fact, the device was launched in April 2010 without even offering any version of Apple’s free music creation software GarageBand and was prevented in many ways from transferring musical or other data as any average laptop computer could have done.
