Computers for Music

The creation of music using electronic instruments, and later computers, laptops and tablets, dates back to the 19th century, and a vast amount of extra detail is available in my book Analog Synthesizers: Understanding, Performing, Buying. This charts the development of electrical and electronic (often valve-based) instruments such as the Telharmonium, Ondes Martenot and Hammond organ, through Dr. Robert Moog’s creation of the familiar analog synthesizer based on a number of now well-understood components or modules, such as audio oscillators, filters and amplifiers, to the simulation first of analog textures and later of much more complex systems of sound creation within computer software packages.
