APPENDIX 1: IPAD AUDIO CONNECTOR DIAGRAM
As discussed in Chapter 3, the iPad’s audio socket is a four-pole mini-jack offering stereo out and mono in. The pin wiring is as follows:

Connecting a stereo headset or stereo line cable works because while it shorts out the microphone (pin 4) to the ground connection (pin 3), it will successfully connect with pins 1, 2 and 3 and allow normal sound output. Plugging in a microphone directly will not work; however, because it will short out pins 3 and 4 and fail to provide an independent signal to the microphone channel. ...
