IP-based storage networking has the potential to extend the shared storage model far beyond the top-tier enterprise networks. As native IP storage and tape devices and affordable IP storage NICs permeate the market, larger and more powerful storage networks can offer shared storage services that are not limited by distance. The ideal goal of shared storage technology is ubiquitous and high-speed data access.
