ALTHOUGH UDP may be suitable for contained, low-loss networks, additional mechanisms are required to preserve data integrity over potentially unusable networks. TCP is required for IP networks that may be subject to congestion, variable bandwidth, and latencies that may result in dropped packets. This chapter examines the main attributes of TCP and TCP's value for IP storage networking.
