2.1. Captive Storage

The value of sharing storage resources is clear when we consider the consequences of binding storage to individual servers. A typical direct-attached storage configuration consists of a server with a SCSI adapter card (or integrated SCSI interface) and several disks or disk arrays connected by a daisy chain of parallel cabling. The end points of this cabling string must be properly terminated to avoid signaling errors along the chain.

Although there are inherent limitations in SCSI cabling such as distance and number of devices supported, these are cosmetic issues compared with the exclusive binding of the disk resources to the server.
