ATM ADDRESS

PNNI uses the 20-octet ATM address for route advertising and address aggregation. The address format is shown in Figure 9-3. This address can have prefixes applied to it, and the prefix can vary in length, depending upon the network configuration.

The specific rules for using the initial domain part (IDP) and the domain specific part (DSP) fields are defined in the basic ATM standards, and are not pertinent to our analysis. Nor are the other fields; the end system identifier (ESI) is required, and the selector (SEL) is not used by PNNI. It has local significance only.
